The arrests of journalists Don Lemon and Georgia Fort echo tactics used in Venezuela and other totalitarian regimes around the world. The Trump administration is criminalizing reporting, doing selective prosecution, and using security forces and judges to intimidate journalists.
Since 2014, Foro Penal has recorded 18,503 cases it classifies as “political detentions” by Maduro’s regime. Political prisoners have been incarcerated in violation of due process and their constitutional rights to freedom of expression and association.
Over the years I’ve been labeled both a fascist and a communist, and my research—based on data gathered at immense sacrifice by Venezuelan journalists and humanitarian activists—is dismissed as merely a “perspective.”
